Changes in Routine, Environment and Schedule

All people react differently to changes in their environment. It is important for those of us who work with individuals with Asperger Syndrome to remember that we also can be a help or a hindrance in one's schedule. Often times, slight changes are extreme changes for individuals with AS. Preparation and education are key components as well as education of others. When approaching a situation that is result or action of a change, one must take into account all that "might" be a contributing factor. If the situation has created a meltdown, it is not advisable to approach the individual and talk them through it. In the middle of a meltdown, individuals with AS are not approachable, unless they are causing harm to themselves or others. It takes interpretation of the individual and the difficulty at present to gain insight that will facilitate the situation. Teaching coping skills is essential for the individual in the future. Not only must skills be taught to the young person, they must also be taught to those who work with them.
